If you’re a football player looking to generate a buzz in football, you need to engage with the typical football fan. What news would they be following? What content would they like? A great example of pinpointing someone’s audience and capitalising on it for the benefit of all involved is our campaign with ex England international Andy Johnson.
Andy approached us shortly after ending his career and wanted to build his profile in the game. He wanted to do so by being positive and inspiring the younger generation. He started on this journey with a football academy called Campioni. We helped him with the social for that. But our main focus, as per the brief, was to help him build his presence online.
How did we do it?
A friend and ex-colleague of Andy’s was battling mental health issues during our campaign and it was widely covered. We brainstormed as a team and found the perfect solution to all the problems Andy raised. He wanted to build his profile but wanted it to be done ethically.
He wanted growth but he wanted it to be centred around positivity and resonating with football fans. We had an idea. We persuaded Andy to pledge 10p for every retweet he got to Mind. Mind are an excellent Mental Health charity helping men and women across the country rebuild their lives.
The team did this in honour of his friend and ex-colleague Aaron Lennon. The goal was to raise awareness for both footballers and non-sportsmen/women that suffer too.
The result?
Andy gained 20,000 followers and had over 146,000 retweets on his tweet. It built awareness for a serious problem in modern society. And finally, it raised thousands for a reputable charity fighting to stamp it out.
