Page Speed
In order to rank in search engines, your site should be reasonably fast. It’s important from both a User Experience (UX) and SEO standpoint.
Users have come to expect websites to be fast loading. As more people access the internet through mobile devices than ever before, poor site speed can be an SEO and user experience (UX) killer.
Google has been using site speed in their algorithms since 2010. Since 2018, the site speed on mobile devices has become an important signal.
Canonical Tag
The canonical tag helps Google know which version of your page to serve, i.e. the http://, the http://www, the https://, the https://www, etc. You need to get this tag added to every page of your site.
Site Security
A secure “https” SSL certificate needs to be applied to your website. Without the SSL, you are leaving the communications between your site visitors and your server open to being intercepted by hackers.
Google has taken the decision to preference rankings based on whether sites are secure with the implied intention that all sites will gradually move to https status in the near future. As such, right now it not only negatively impacts your Google ranking but no doubt can scare would-be clients away as well.
Chrome users, for example, will see a warning in their browser advising your site is not secure. This is off-putting and can affect conversion/enquiry rates. As such, this needs addressing ASAP.
“A 2019 survey of 1,324 UK adults found that 46 percent said that they would not enter their names or financial information into a site that was not secure. And 64 percent of that group said they would leave the site “instantly.”
Mobile Friendly
If your website has not been built without a mobile responsive design, the user experience will be poor for potential customers/clients. As such, you’ll have a far lower conversion rate than if your site was mobile responsive. As a result, Google will lower your search rankings thus reducing the potential number of customers/clients who will be finding your site in the first place.
Sitewide Crawlability of Pages
This refers to whether Google can access the pages on your site that you want it to find, to see what’s on those pages, and index the content on them.
There’s a difference between Google being able to find a page, read it and being allowed to index that page and put it in its index. If Google can’t crawl your site’s pages, it won’t be able to save your page’s content in its index. So we need to make sure all your valuable content is reachable for Google.
HTTP Status Codes
We’ll investigate whether your developers have correctly implemented 301 redirects. This is like providing a forwarding address to Google for any pages that have been deleted. We’ll also ensure that any such 404 pages are highlighted so they can be 301’d to the correct new location.
Meta Tag Implementation
Correct use of the title tag, meta description, meta robots, canonical and hreflang tags. We’ll look at your index/noindex and follow/nofollow implementation to ensure that all pages that should be indexed are being indexed. That all pages that should not be indexed are not indexed, and that all links that should be followed or not followed are implemented correctly.
Robots.txt File
This file acts as a gatekeeper to search engines. It effectively tells them what pages they are allowed to index. It’s a first port of call for search engine spiders so they know which parts of the site they are permitted to index and which they are told to stay away from.
As such, you need your robots.txt file to be correctly implemented or else you could be blocking the likes of Google and Bing from indexed pages of your site you want them to.
JS and CSS Blocking
JavaScript (JS) and CSS blocking can hinder a proper indexation of content on a web page. Just like with the robots.txt, you want to ensure Google can correctly index and render all the JS and CSS you want them to. Otherwise you could again be leaving valuable content out of the index.
Site Structure
Think of your website like a pyramid with your Homepage at the top. Next comes your category pages followed by your product pages (for eCommerce sites) and finally your blog.
The larger your site footprint (pages indexed), the more pages are internally linking to your homepage and category pages as these should be in your run of site navigation. So, assuming you’ve keyword optimised your category pages, you’re giving yourself the best chance of ranking for said pages if the rest of your SEO plan is correctly implemented.
